aufs vs overlayfs for factory settings use case

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hi guys,

I hope to be on the right mailing list.
I need to choose union fs for the embedded telecom product.
The main use case is to easily restore the product to factory settings.
Currently, the product uses Linux Kernel 3.4.x.

>From my "google" efforts I understand that:
 - aufs is deemed to be overblown and unreadable code (~20k lines)
 - aufs is not included in Linux Kernel
 - aufs has a lot of features
 - overlayfs source code is neat and nice (~10k lines)
 - overlayfs is mainlined on Oct 24 2014 in Linux 3.18-rc2 (e9be9d5 overlay
filesystem)
 - overlayfs has less features (no NFS mount for example)

It seems to me, that overlayfs is the winner.
At least for the factory settings use case.

But the questions remains?
 - Q: Is there an official backport to Linux Kernel 3.4.x?
 - Q: And, probably, other Linux Kernel version?

Thanks a bunch,
