Samba has the following check: # recent FreeBSD, NetBSD have creation timestamps called birthtime: AC_CHECK_MEMBERS([struct stat.st_birthtimespec.tv_nsec]) AC_CHECK_MEMBERS([struct stat.st_birthtime], AC_CHECK_MEMBERS([struct stat.st_birthtimensec])) and the supporting code around that.
