That notices actually aren't needed any more?  Yes.  The bit I was
referring to was this:

1	 The symbol © (the letter C in a circle), or the word
  "Copyright," or the abbreviation "Copr."; and

In particular, I've seen elsewhere that (c) is not a valid representation
of 'the letter C in a circle'.
