statfs failures

Noticed that cifs_statfs returns 0 if the server does not support
either of the more common network requests (for the equivalent of
statfs in cifs protocol).   This means that default values are set,
which is probably ok (statfs has to work for mount to work ...
right?), but was wondering if there is a reasonable alternative
