ext4 file system check

Hi folks!

We are running several server system with ext4 as file system.
An Ubuntu 14.04 server installation has disabled the periodic file
system check per default:
# uname -r
3.13.0-55-generic
# tune2fs -l /dev/sda1 | grep mount
Last mounted on: /
Default mount options: user_xattr acl
Last mount time: Thu Jun 18 11:04:23 2015
Maximum mount count: -1

It seems this change was introduced with Ubuntu 13.10:

Therefore my questions:
* Is a regular file system check recommended for ext4? (i.e. for
consistency)
* Is there any detailed documentation what happens while a check is run?

Thanks a lot, Georg
