Two other data points:
- same problem with a 2.6.29-2-amd64 kernel from Debian
- with that 2.6.29-2-amd64, disabling the journal on the ext4 filesytem
  using 'tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/sda5' makes the problem go away
