HDTV performance issues

Hi guys,

I would like to ask those of you testing DVB-S2 things on Linux, what kind
of hardware you are using. I did several tests on different hardware and
software configurations and I always struggled with performance issues.

HW:

* CPU: Pentium 4 3.4GHz, Intel Dual Core 1.8GHz, AMD Athlon64 3800+
* Sat.card: Technisat Skystar HD (SAA7146/STB0899)
* Graphics card: NVidia 7600GT with proprietary NVidia driver

SW:

* kernels: 2.6.19 - 2.6.22.1
* patches: Manus an Laasas patches and sources or Artems patch for 2.6.22.1
kernel
* mplayer
* mythtv

* HDTV stations: Astra HD Promo, Pro7 HD, Anixe HD, Sat1 HD from Astra 1L
(19.2E) and Eins Festival HD from Astra 1H (19.2E)

The best results I got were with Astra HD Promo channel, which means a few
seconds of motion picture until my CPU reached utilisation of 100% resulting
in mplayer crash. I was hardly successfull with other channels - I was able
to get a lock, but the picture looked like it was encrypted.

Mythtv was only able to tune the Eins Festival HD channel and the playback
was more stable than in mplayer, but still with big performance problems -
100% CPU utilisation and chopping picture and sound.

However there is no MPEG4 processing support in Linux kernel/NVidia driver,
I cannot believe that CPU's listed above are not powerfull enough for HDTV
playback. Well, I may also be wrong...

In case you have any advice, please let me know.

Thanks,

Roman
