This thread started as a crosspost between v4l and dvb lists and now only on dvb it's a bit off-topic. That's another problem. I try as possible to buy devices that Linux supports, but for example, when I bought my Xceive based board, I just looked at the CARDLIST.tuner and checked that "tuner=71 - Xceive xc3028" was supported. As it apparently had support for Conexant chips too, I thought it was supported. Of course, there was the README.cx88 file which states: video - Basically works. Ok. So I already knew that the support was incomplete. But I tried as much as I can to help the developers by testing their code etc... and Markus did it. Which his experimental tree I can watch video and listen to radio... > And remember: some of these developers do this in their spare time > without payment. I think that if someone decides to support a device, he/she should do it right, otherwise it will be better not to do it at all. > Also don't blame the developers, blame the companies withholding basic > information on how to program these device. Yes, I blame the companies too. I blame Microsoft and its partners. I blame all of them. But that's what life is. And the world or the market will have no mercy of Linux users/developers so we have to be better than them. > - Fun, > - unlock extended product features, > - long term product support. > - Freedom and ownership, a GNU/Linux system will put control in the > hands of the user. > - Technical advancement of your favorite OS. Ok. I, as a user, try as hard as i can to test new code and provide good bug reports. If I was a programmer, maybe I could help more... > So the userspace framework is an intermediate solution until we have a > better alternatives.
