My previous problem with the immediate hangs was because I had changed the de-interlacing algorithm from 2xBob to Kernel. Not sure why that no longer works, but anyway that's not on topic... I played around for a few hours last night constantly switching channels and I didn't get a USB disconnect. So it appears that your patch has worked for me.
