I assumed from "taking input only using the linux input system" that the
application did just that.

One way of testing where the problem lies would be to run "input-event
<num>" where num is the number of the event device corresponding to the ir
remote. Check the output when pressing one key on the remote, if one
keypress (and release) is generated, the driver is working as expected and
something else (e.g. the application) is at fault...

And I'll stop commenting on the av7110 driver now since it's not on my radar.
