I just tried playing your example file in mplayer and it seems to be
working for me now. This didn't work when I tried to do the same thing
only a month or two ago with another sample, which also works too now. I
guess a recent mplayer/ffmpeg update has fixed it.

This is with the FC5 ATrpms.net mplayer package
