Thanks for the info. It seems that the distro I'm using doesn't have UDEV
support built-in (VectorLinux based Puppy 2.01 distro for embedded devices,
www.puppylinux.org). At least there aren't any /lib/udev/ or /etc/udev/
directories, udev related binaries are also missing. I have to try to
install udev support myself if that's the only way to load firmware files.

Please make sure you have installed udev (it's the actual component which
loads the firmware and passes it to the kernel).
