If it is not at all necessary, why does the specifications and datsheets have created a new field MODCOD ? They could have used the existing Modulation + FE code rate. And it will be quite consistent too, at all places.
I could've agreed with that argument, if at any place it was different. MODCOD's have a standardized values too, in the specs as well as the device specific datasheets.
