This is just a guess, but from the looks below, it looks like mplayer 
doesnt know where (or how) to find your device.  It probably needs a 
parameter or something.  Try man mplayer... ...or read on below to see 
how I do my own testing.

I don't know what you did wrong (maybe someone else does), as I havent 
been able to get mplayer to work like that on my system.

Instead, this is what I do:

azap WNET_HD -r     (-r option is *very* important)
mplayer /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 -tskeepbroken -cache 8192

That works for me, although the options that I am passing to mplayer are 
completely optional.  You must keep azap running in order for mplayer to 
receive the stream.

MythTV does a nice job of managing all this for you... I highly 
recommend it.
