I believe that this is different for different cards, but
AFAIK the cards do not use pin 8 for widescreen signalling,
instead they signal WSS via VBI. For some cards pin 8 can
be controlled (only on/off) via saa7146 or av7110 GPIOs,
just grep for SCART in av7110.c and do some experiments.
