If I'm not wrong (don't know if there's any change for that kernel version), firmware is loaded using hotplug. For me, the file should be located in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/
Nevertheless, I guess it depends on the linux distribution or the hotplug version, so take a look to /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent to be sure where hotplug wants the firmware file to be.
