You can via /dev/input/event<x>.

http://dl.bytesex.org/cvs-snapshots/input-<version>.tar.gz has a tool
to dump & modify keytables.

Good question.

It would be an option if it would be in the standard kernel.  That
would allow to nicely handle other than rc5 remotes (this is what cx88
can decode at the moment).
