These sort of problems are not unique to 2.6.11. An Knoppix install that uses 2.6.9 has sometimes exhibited problems recognising the DMA core of a VisionPlus DVB-T, and an AverTv DVB-T 761. The fix was to move the module load earlier in the boot. I was adding it at the end of /etc/modules. Putting dst and dvb-8xx at the start fixed the error.
