On the gdb upstream front there is good and bad news again. The good news is that the regression reported in the last round was fixed now [1]. The bad news is that upcoming 7.9 has a new regression that is even causing a crash of the target kernel [2]. So the recommendation is still to stick with gdb 7.7.
