No, the problem does not longer exists then. Or do you see a "*" to be
expanded on runtime?

I only use -j64 ...

make mandocs
-> make a.9 b.9 c.9 d.9 ... z.9
   -> xmlto a.xml; gzip *
   -> xmlto b.xml; gzip *
   -> xmlto c.xml; gzip *
   -> xmlto d.xml; gzip *
   ...
   -> xmlto z.xml; gzip *
