Sorry, I *must* not be thinking straight, but...

don't you want to do the obj_new only if obj==NULL here?  So

if (obj) {
	if (obj->ptr != ptr)
		return -EINVAL;
	else
		return obj->objref;
}
obj = obj_new(...)
...

?
