I also tried to put cache files on ext3 on image in tmpfs.
(You need user_xattr for fscache so tmpfs will not work, but you can make image in tmpfs mount it as loop device, mkfs and mount as ext3 fs)

Looks like it's stable enough to use but only 2Gb doesn't help much.
