There is a whole section on the AV linux manual pdf that describes how to create a "persistent" bootable image on a usb stick.

I have used a AV linux image (ok not a persistant one) to work with a friends HP laptop and record with Ardour [1] while Hydrogen was running. The latency, according to qjack was 25ms - not as good as my home setup but hey.

[1] - we used two usb sticks - one with the operating system and one to record on.
