This is only required if installing the driver from nvidia's own site (at
least it was like that a long while ago)
Could be, but I think I did it that way in the previous Linux install I
had on the machine. (Changed motherboard, it has ATI on it, not NVidia.
And various other hardware changes made a fresh install a much better idea.)
