Yes, it happens just plugging the midi in of the FCB1010 to the midi out of any of the edirol usb devices - the FCB1010 signals its disapproval by lighting up a period next to the currently selected bank. If I try turning it off and on, it starts blinking and won't do anything else.

Does this happen *before* you try to actually use the FCB1010?

What differentiates Roland devices from most other MIDI interfaces is
that they send Active Sense messages.  The FCB1010 manual says this is
supported, and in any case these should be ignored if unsupported, but
one can never know how buggy the firmware is.
