This is possible and could archive mono compatibility, but it also could cause issues. You music will sound different with different speakers, in different rooms etc., so what's bad with a stereo mix, that isn't absolutely hard to the left and right. It doesn't matter, if the volume of the HiHat is a little bit louder or silenter when moving around the room.

Do conservative panning by the pan pots and add some decent room by early reflections of a reverb.
