I think you can use Audacity, there is a function there for splitting
stereo to mono, then you just delete the R channel and export it as
mono wav/mp3/whatever or just play it directly from audacity :)
You can also use play (from sox [1]) to play only one channel:

play stero_file.wav remix 1 #(for left channel)
play stero_file.wav remix 2 #(for right channel)
