In both cases, they serve to paint a quick picture of a character, in Mozart's case quite a frivolous one, in Hendrix' case something more dark. If you would be capable of looking a bit deeper than the surface, you'd discover that Mozart's 'Magic Flute' is not just bourgeois divertissement but quite an eleborate exploration of the ambiguity of good vs. evil, of right vs. wrong.
