Yes you are basically splitting the sample up into attack,sustain and decay where the sustain can be looped for as long as needed but the decay is always played afterwards.
This also works for musical passages where you have a passage that has a definite start phrase and end phrase with a repeating middle phrase that you may want to vary the number of repetitions based on how long the song ends up being.
