Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I've hadfun (re) discoveeing all this software. I like carla but it seems a bit buggy and cpu hungry. Strangely, hosting the plugins in qtractor used less cpu! Any ideas why?
Another annoying thing I have encountered is linuxsampler clicking and crackling with multiple notes. Never had this problem before but thus is the first time I've used avlinux on my dektop... will investigate further..
I would recommend you try running Aspect (non-free but best GUI synth plugin for Linux) or Noisemaker (best FOSS GUI synth plugin) under Carla, my fave unfinished plugin host. You can automate and control most everything under these synths and at least Aspect lets you configure a list of configs or presets that you can switch through via MIDI but both synths sound fantastic. You can easily run at least one or two instances of Noisemaker without xruns on a Atom netbook and so that means you get a good few (4 or 5x) as many instances of Aspect running as well instead because Aspect is that much more efficient than its best open source alternative Noisemaker.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideally should be lightweight (capable of running on an old eeepc 701), lots of control possibilities (interact with controls via midi knobs), rock solid stable, possible to recall state from command line.
Not all of these are essential but I would like it to start up and interact with my kb without too much typing on-stage!
I do have a real soft spot for whysynth but the midi learn and recall of state seem tricky/impossible with ghostess?
I would also like suggestions for organs (Beatrix?), electric pianos, romplers.. I am seriouslh considering a solid state keyboard or sound module, but it seems it should be possible with linux...
Suggestions for reasonably priced hardware (2nd hand?) Options would also be interesting...
