Hi, I use mediatomb, it's pretty basic but does the job. I use it only
on LAN; at one time I wanted to connect to it from outside my LAN and
found this article

which I found really cool at the time, but sincerely I can't recall why
now. Maybe because you connect to it securely via ssh? Anyhow if that's
not a priority a simple dynamic dns service for connecting to your home
network from outside (supposing you don't pay for a static ip) should be
enough
