ok.... so after all this: 1. there ARE folks successfully using a Mutiface on an ExpressCard adapter with kernels more recent than 3.1. 2. there is a lot of discussion about pulseaudio -- i don't have pulseaudio on this machine. 3. there is some discussion about dbus -- not sure if that applies or not, but the jack failure happens the same way in qjackctl with "Enable D-Bus interface" box UNchecked, so i think not. to review, here's what happens when jack falls over for me with kernels beyond 3.1-6 (note that this is in a boot in which i have not touched hdspmixer, so let's forget about *that* issue for now!): plutek@palnote:~$ jackd -p1024 -dalsa -r44100 -p256 -n2 -D -Chw:0,0 -Phw:0,0 & [1] 3671 plutek@palnote:~$ jackdmp 1.9.9 Copyright 2001-2005 Paul Davis and others.
