the MIDI driver selector only exists to start up a "builtin bridge" between teh world of ALSA MIDI and JACK MIDI. neither of its options are good. you should use, as mentioned way up-thread:

        a2jmidid -e

and yes, some developer should fix this pathetic state of affairs.
