Does anyone know of a (preferably command line) program to generate
chord names from note values. I'd like to be able to type in something
like:

 >> c d g

and get back

G major

or something like that.

Thanks.

My messages seem not to pass.. trying this one from the web interface of gmail.

There is this one that is capable of doing what you ask:
http://code.google.com/p/mingus/

http://code.google.com/p/mingus/wiki/tutorialChords

>>> chords.determine(["C", "E", "G"])
['C major triad']
>>> chords.determine(["B", "C", "E", "G"])
['C major seventh, third inversion']
>>> chords.determine(["B", "C", "E", "G#"])
['C augmented major seventh, third inversion']
