Re: Using SB AWE64 MIDI interfaces

I had an original SB AWE64 (ISA card as stated earlier) with the original SB MIDI connection kit (joystick port and MIDI IN/OUT). Rosegarden worked fine with it.

To see if you have the correct MIDI cables for the AWE64, Rosegarden should spot the MIDI connection. If it doesn't, then it looks like you have the wrong MIDI connector for the AWE64.

To get sound out of that AWE64, you had to go into the ALSA mixer and select one of the settings (sorry, I can't remember which one anymore) that was just a button (on/off only, no volume slider). I think it was the audio/SPDIF, or Jack, or something. This was the crucial button to get set correctly to get any audio sound output. Then I used the ALSACONFIG, ALSASAVE, or whatever it's called now to save those settings, so that on the next reboot you don't have to go through the process again of resetting that button.

It sounds like you have a MIDI keyboard. In that case, it's probably easier to get a USB MIDI in/out cable or box rather than trying to run down a 1-use only MIDI connection kit for your AWE64. As was suggested before, let Rosegarden run a synth and use USB for the MIDI.

Good luck,
Stephen.

Leigh,

Thanks for this precision. I'll use software synthesizer.

About playing from/to an external MIDI keyboard, do you think it is
supported under Linux with this card?

At this time, when I run these commands:

pmidi -p 14:0 myfile.mid
or
pmidi -p 20:0 myfile.mid

I don't get any sound anywhere.

Thanks,
A common pitfall with Creative (and "soundblaster compatible") cards
is the type of joystick-port<-> MIDI cable to use, happened to me at
least when I got my Audigy2: there are active and passive cables for
this, and you have to use the active one, i.e. with some electronics
(a good part of the actual MIDI interface) built into the cable.
