Maybe the problem is that XCB support was dropped from regular cairo
builds some time ago:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=465759

For example on arch linux, you have to use a community package in
order to get back the XCB support:

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=40641
