Second that sentiment, but I'd go for one of the 4x4 grid models. The
Akai ones are great - I have an MPD24 working ootb with Linux now. I'm
also a big fan of the Korg one (think it's the PadKontrol) just for
the light-up pads.

You can do a lot with a finger drumming pad controller and a decent
sense of rhythm.
