Yah, 11.10 is the recommended bug fix I was thinking of.
My wife uses Unity on her netbook, it works OK for her, but she doesn't
do anything more with audio than play youtube vids and listen to podcasts.

Which version of Ubuntu Unity? The first Unity had numerous bugs in it,
perhaps you're meeting one of them? I understand the new one fixes some
things.
