When a band I was in wanted to do that, the law was confusing enough 
that even my regular lawyer suggest that I seek the advise of an 
intellectually property lawyer that specializes in the music industry.
What we ended up doing was to contact the artist and get written 
permission to use their material.  The second alternative turned out 
to be *much* easier than the other route.
