I know the hi-fi track on a domestic VHS/Betacam was derived originally from the NICAM signal but you're probably right it wasn't put down to tape in the same format...

Actually further searching seems to confirm it is just FM modulated analogue audio. Can't find any specifics like bandwidth etc though.

Either way you're not going to get any tape compression from bouncing to it and back.
