Just don't make your app dependent on some specific mail client.

I've used K3B for many years now. Twice now, it has popped up asking my option of the program. It then tries to mail it using KMail, which I don't have installed. So you'd think it would recognize the failure and either give me the email text to copy and paste into my mail client of choice? No, it just hangs forever until I close K3B ...

That's called integration.

No, it's called bad assumption by the programmer: that just because someone uses one KDE program, they use them all.
