64bits is double (comes from 32bit computer architecture, so double uses two words per value.)

Single generally uses 24bit values and 8bits of exponent.
Double uses 53bit values with 11bits of exponent.


Oh I see. So whats this Pro tools 48bit mixer talk about that goes on in the industry?
Why would it be better or more precise than the Ardour mixer (which i prefer over Protools).
Is it another one of these?

- The pro audio world is today infested with the same type of pseudo-
science that hit the hifi market 25 or more years ago and that makes
some people pay $3000 for a piece of cable and two connectors, or makes
them spend money on machines to replace old and tired electrons by fresh
young ones which sound better.
- The same wave of nonsense now hits also the software world.
