I wonder if Paul knows that someone is packaging an alpha version of
ardour3...

that is exactly what alpha versions are for - to prepare for the releases, to find issues, to get bugs ironed out before a release.

And that is what experimental is for .. to test things that you may want to release before putting them into sid and making them available to the general debian user who does not specifically seek out an alpha version to test. That is why it has appeared occasionally, and why that was mentioned on debian multimedia maintainers lists, especially as the whole jack2 jack1 system was being put in place.

That kind of approach is very appropriate - it means it gets built on a wide variety of architectures and is tested against the various jack versions available and the whole selection of related apps and libraries that are in the repo. It sure beats releasing a package into sid and fixing the packaging bugs next.
