Time to get off-line and to install Debian ... I hope PPPoE won't force
me to download 8 DVDs. I'll now try the net-install.

Consider aptosid if you want almost-pure debian with someone looking over the latest changes to sid and applying fixes/warnings if needed. It is the re-named sidux, and they were the core of the kannotix team before that, so they have been maintaining a good rolling distribution for a long time now and tend to be mirrored in a lot of big mirrors. Xfce or KDE, 64 or 32 bit versions.

The multimedia maintainers for debian have been very active, and that work is mostly in sid rather than squeeze (which is from about 9 months ago now, and will be the stable version for the next two years).
