Thanks Dave. I gave SoundCrab a go but it caused me even bigger xrun problems than QSynth, plus constant 'alarm bells', so to speak. Shame - it looked promising.

(I should point out that I'm fairly new to Linux, so the problems I'm having may not be inherent in the applications themselves - I may just not be configuring things correctly due to the limited time and knowledge I have).
