Another direction than you're heading, but this guy's work with
Live/midi foot controller/home built stand-up bowed "bass" might spark
some translatable ideas for a motion-capture based "invisible cello"
like I think you have in mind...

thanks for posting so this, really good. Also the "sound builders" show
it mentions, seen some videos on youtube seems very interesting

I would think an important part of the motion would be the finger pressing against the neck as it moves for vibrato, vs a purely-motion capture method.
