Especially annoying when you watch a video from youtube (mono) where VLC 
connects only one port (right or left), it does not really help to connect 
the 2nd port by hand, with the next video in chain or a stop and start you 
again have only one chanal connected.

Might not be of any help but mplayer plays nice with jack:

mplayer -ao jack FILENAME-PATTERN
