Hello Michael!
I'm blind myuself, though only using the CLI (text based console). You could try this to copy direct wav-tracks from your CD:
cdpara -w -B 1-
  Or you could install abcde:
aptitude install abcde
  Then you can type:
abcde
on the console on on some kind of xterminal (xterm, gterm or what they are called).
  To get to the console you type:
Ctrl+Alt+F1
You can use up to F6 in that combination. to get back to the GUI (Gnome and Orca) use:
Ctrl+f7
  or:
Ctrl+F8
