Bach wasn't exactly striving for fame, but he was surely trying to
impress in order to secure a position that would allow him to provide
for a family doing what he loved to do.



Perhaps it was one of the things he did. I just think that it is too everyday an interest and certainly it was not an interest which motivated him. It was just something he could also do with his skill and talent. The problem with many commercial artists today that money is their only motivation. Bach would write music even if he was starving.

There is a saying in Russia about writers: if you are able not to write - then don't.

Bach was one of those people (I argue) who was not able not to write music. It had nothing to do with impressing in order to secure a position. Real talent leads a person. In fact, many genius people lived in poverty. I am not saying this is good, but they kept doing what they did in spite of that.
