A friend of mine was telling me how he listens to his speech podcasts

one(s) should I investigate? Of course, I want the original pitch at
any playback speed.
If you don't mind command line stuff, mplayer has playback speed control:

INTERACTIVE CONTROL
        MPlayer has a fully configurable, command-driven control
layer which
        allows you to control MPlayer using keyboard, mouse, joystick or
remote
        control (with LIRC). See the -input option for ways to
customize it.

        keyboard control
               <- and ->
                    Seek backward/forward 10 seconds.
               up and down
                    Seek forward/backward 1 minute.
               pgup and pgdown
                    Seek forward/backward 10 minutes.
               [ and ]
                    Decrease/increase current playback speed by 10%.
               { and }
                    Halve/double current playback speed.
               backspace
                    Reset playback speed to normal.

The trouble with [ and ] in mplayer is that they don't preserve the
original pitch.
But

mplayer -af scaletempo -speed 1.2 yourfile.mp3

of which I probably learned on this list, does.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I don't use speed adjustments when listening to audio, but I'm not into spoken podcast type things.
